  • It’s easy: just be the protagonist

    • Prot 100000000

    • Or be the cameraman

    • U a genius

    • @Malia Domino she did it with the director to get the roles for mockingbird and hunger games

    • @GoldenTNT ayo what???

  • I actually saw this super genius idea (I didn’t come up with it, just sharing) but if you took the poisonous berries from the first book, and put them in empty parachutes from sponsors and drop them near tributes, they will think they’re sponsors sent them food and die. Another option would be to “accidentally” drop the berries when running from someone, the tribute will think it’s real food and eat them

    • I read all of the books and never thought about that

    • @Bekfast Except who would accept juice from another contestant? If you left it around, they'll think" the ###?!". That is, unless you pack it well enough to look like it came from on high.

    • @Aly Seleem but you can make it into juice so they won’t recognise that it’s poisonous

    • Sound idea. Unfortunately, anyone who knows their berries wouldn't fall for it, though they might think their sponsors are trying to poison them for whatever reason.

    • Your a genius the last part is really original.

  • Other tributes: “ok how am I gonna do this” The tribute who watched this video: *laughs in survival*

    • In other words, laughs in Australian

    • Man if the human population gets too big, then maybe the government will actually start having a hunger games! I’ll be screwed!

    • Finally an excuse to eat my little heart out ☺️🍕🍔🌮

    • @Lord Maniel weird flex. but ok

    • @Some Otherworldly Being same.

  • I've watched part one and two five times already because it's getting closer to 2021 and I want to be ready for any scenario.

    • @Introvortex what year u from?

    • @Chaaos I am from further in the future and this is true

    • *May the odds be with you*

    • Hello I’m from the future and yes it was like this

    • @Phoenix I mean if it wasn’t real and depending on elimination instead of death- then yeah! Otherwise I feel like it’d be horrifying. I mean, it’s just as bad as watching children die but instead they’re fighting to the death, which is worse.. Unless it’s someone I hate, then I don’t really care 😀.

  • The winners weren’t equally spread across the districts though. Haymitch was the only previous winner from their district able to train Katniss and Peta

    • @Dev Ra i think it was mentioned somewhere (i forgot where so i could be wrong) that it was capitol people who did the original mentoring before there were any victors!

    • Haymitch was taught by the previous Victor(gonna say he's Brian cause otherwise I'm gonna get confused) Who taught Brian? Capitol soldiers? Maybe nobody taught Brian.

    • there also was another trough history but he wasnt that good and hes dead

    • Wrong Peeta

  • One other thing: Rub the knives on poisonous plants to make poison knives. So even if you only hit someone in, say, the leg, they're still done.

    • As many others have said, godamn genius. Such a good-yet evil- idea.

    • @Just Some Commenter poison can also be absorbed

    • Uhm, ackshually, poison is when ingested, venom is when it's in the bloodstream.

    • @Clare McCulloch Oh, ok. Yes, that's true

  • Foxface knew everything about bugs and plants, so there is no way she would have mistaken nightshade for anything else. She totally knew what she was doing when she ate those berries.

    • Actually, In the book it mentions that a lot of the wildlife and plantlife in the arena are similar to that around district 12. This is why Katniss knows what nightlock is but Foxface dosent because district 5 is not exactly next to 12, not to mention district 5 is electrical so Foxface probably wouldn't know too much about plantlife. My guess is she just tried to cram all the bug and plant info in the week of training, and tried to intimidate the other tributes by saying she knew lots about them. Haymitch did say not to tell the other tributes what your best skills are after all.

    • @Katya S yes, but if she knew what she was doing, I think she tought that peeta and katniss were gonna eat those berries, leaving only the traps of the impatient capitol, cato, and her. so death.

    • Sorry, but this... doesn't make sense. There were only 4 other tributes still in the area, she had a pretty good chance of winning especially considering the feud between Cato and Katniss & Peeta. Also, in the books it is explicitly stated that she ate the berries because she saw Peeta picking them and (probably because he was allied with Katniss) she guessed that the berries were safe to eat.

    • @Asphöjden Karlstad there was only one Career left

    • @Asphöjden Karlstad I’d do the same too

  • Darnit! Now the other 12 million people in that watched this video are gonna know how to win too! So really it is 1/24 :(

    • “oh, you saw mat’s video to?”

    • *14 million

    • 7 billion ppl on earth and 12 million watched it... So yeah it's still 10/24. its unlikely that you will join a game with ppl that watched this. but some ppl rewatched this so its not even 12 million ppl.

    • Just *git better than everyone else*

    • *13 million (good job matpat)

  • Let’s be honest. Anyone watching this video would be one of the first ones out in the games.

    • fair

    • Yeah probably unless I know what plants are edible

    • Maybe not quite first for me; I would make it past the bloodbath, then would die of starvation cause I have 0 ability to figure out what is edible.

  • “I mean, what are you gonna do with a trident? Roast three marshmallows at once?” Finnick has left the chat.

  • Fun fact: The girl that died from eating poison berries was seen in the film studying which berroes and plants are poisonous, which some fans have taken as a sign of deliberate intent to commit suicide.

    • Feel good

    • I think from the books it was clear that the berries that Katniss found were not in the training and were berries that she knew in the district 12, so that's why Foxface didn't know them and died accidentally

    • @LordIce I dont think she did. Katniss had spent time there as well, I think and she didnt know about them as well. The girl Who died from them had seen Peta collect them so she thought he knew about them

    • Fun fact? I THINK NOT!

    • Odd. I haven’t read the books or watched the movies, yet that was practically the first thing I’ve noticed...

  • Fun story! Because of this single video, I have had virtually no body insecurities whatsoever in four years. As a little grade seven who loved the Hunger Games, first watching this video was great. Clearly, the advice of putting on weight to survive stuck in my mind, because about a week later, I was getting dressed and looked in the mirror. I looked a bit fatter than usual, but instead of some degrading and self deprecating comment, my first thought - and I quote - was “eh, you’d survive the hunger games”. And that has stuck with me for four years now, meaning I haven’t been ashamed of my body for the entire of high school. So thanks Matt!

  • Me who practices slingshot and archery: *"Am I a joke to you?"*

  • Did Matt actually spend 3 minutes or more just talking about how overeating junk and carbs is GOOD for you? Get this man a medal.

  • I love how he makes it sound so easy to master throwing knives in 3 days

  • I love how he talks as if we might actually experience the hunger games.

    • @Phoenix Asher wow

    • Ima make it happen

    • 😅 well... DT - Snow JB - Coin BLM Protestors - Rebelling Districts Cops - Peacekeepers Three-fingered hand sign - BLM fist 😰

    • @Andrew Thummel not in the slightest lol

  • Matpat: wow, there’s a lot of topics that we could take on here Also matpat: proceeds to not make another hunger games theory for the next 5 years

    • I was looking for this comment, would love to see his take on other parts of the franchise

  • "Dude, these orphans are getting destroyed." -Technoblade

    • Lmao true

    • Not all main characters survived (laughs in Tris form divergent)

    • “I drop kicked that child in self defense”

    • @Dave Strider trolling skeppy in skyblock I think it was during the grinch game

    • AHAHAHAHAHAHA the blade is *everywhere*

  • So age doesn’t affect your chances but finick was the youngest ever winner at 14 despite reapings starting at 12?

    • i think he’s the youngest alive tribute (at the time at least, rip finnick)

    • He wasn’t the youngest, he was ONE of the youngest.

    • From survival skills, tonnes of sponsors and killing- not being 14

  • “What are you going to do with a trident!?” Finnick: “Am I a joke to you?”

  • I make sure to re-watch this every so often to refresh my mind y'know, just in case

    • @yellowjellow Yes.

    • Or re-read, never watched the moves

    • If our world really becomes even more crap, this could happen. You know what he said - "The More You Know!"

    • Me too. You never know.

    • Ditto

  • *"ODDS don't have to do with LUCK, they have to do with MATH."* Of course they do, Matpat. Of COURSE they do.

  • Knives are cool and all but I’d rather tie it to the end of a stick. Spears and polearms have been hunting tools and battlefield weapons since before the Bronze Age, and they’re also relatively easy to learn compared to other weapons. If you have a time crunch and have to become proficient in a weapon in a very little amount of time, my bet is spear. they also have a range advantage too so everyone with their tiny little knives aren’t gonna be able to reach you before you reach them

  • The best weapon you can learn is the spear. Your odds of getting on are 2 in 25 because of the trident, and if you don’t get one it’s probably the easiest weapon to make sense it’s just a pokey stick. Besides the spear is the best weapon you can get in the cornucopia, the only weapon that might be bettered the bow

  • 3:18 Finnick won when he was 14 and was apparently one of the youngest tributes to win. I think it’s safe to say that no 12 year old has won before.

  • Haymitch won because he was one of the first to the Cornucopia, grabbing a knife and supply bag. Any food in the arena that wasn't in a supply bag was poisoned.

    • @It’s Mike No, the girl who died from the birds was his former ally, whom he ran back to save but failed in way mirroring Katniss and Rue.

    • @It’s Mike what r u going on about? The final girl haymitch was in the game with was from district 1, and haymitch killed her by using the forcefield of the arena as a weapon. Not birds.

    • @Valheru you drunk?

    • @Kacper Nowak was that the games where there was double tributes or no

    • Yea haymith won becouse he was first but more than 60 percent of tributes was sleapy and interested about the biutifull arena meyby when all the tributes taht are 24 more will be full of energy haymith will dia thanks

  • Instead of flat-out running from the cornucopia, I would run away and then hide in the bushes or other natural camouflage , wait till things calm down and everyone's gone, and loot the remains, chances are the dead tributes have something on them and the cornucopia still has some supplies left.

  • Just rewatching this after 5 years. I'm a lot older now, so I noticed that he did his math completely wrong on the career tributes, throwing the whole video off. Here's what I mean: The majority of the KNOWN victors are from hunger games 75, meaning that 24 of them are evenly spread out across all different districts. The movies and books both SPECIFICALLY say that most careers come from 1, 2, 3, and 4. And not only did I think of a disproof for matpat's reasoning, but I believe the movies (idk about the books) ALSO have Haymitch say that the majority of the time careers win. That would be a hard thing for any character to get wrong.

  • These videos are always so immersive I get caught up in them way too much than I should

  • I really can't count how often I've watched this video... its just so funny 🥰😂

  • Isn’t it ironic, Foxface, the girl who spent so much time studying plants and in the deleted scenes bragged about how smart she was, died to some berries.

    • I always assumed this even in the books when katniss thinks it was an accident bc that's just her pov so I don't accept it as reliable narration about foxfaces thought process, I was thinkin that my hunger games tactic would prob be suicide to avoid a brutal drawn out death but haymitch using the forcefield as a weapon got his family killed cause it deprived the audience of violence so you'd have to make it look like an accident to protect your loved ones, if I found quick painless death berries I'd definitely eat em especially cause foxface didn't have any fighting skills and so close to the finale she was gonna have to confront another tribute eventually also there's a theory that she made sure to eat them before peeta did to warn him and katniss that they were poisonous to kinda make her death mean something if she was gonna die anyway which I would believe as well I def don't think it was unintentional tho someone who's whole tactic is being smart in a survival setting would know their poisonous plants

    • To everyone saying she committed suicide: in the books it is explicitly stated that Foxface survived so long because she assumed that others were competent. She only died because someone else made a mistake. If she wanted to commit suicide, she would have just picked the berries herself instead of going through the difficult process of stealing them. Also, this view of hers that others are competent and know more than her makes me doubt that she would brag, and (correct me if I'm wrong) I don't think there was anything like bragging on her part in the books. It feels out of character, and I'm glad they left it out. TLDR: The books indicate that she didn't commit suicide, and I think Foxface bragging would have been out of character.

    • She knew they were poisonous, meaning she ate them and committed suicide

    • AFADADGAH NICE

  • It's a little insane to think that 6 years ago I watched this video with my sister" the first one of any of your videos we had watched. and now we're both addicted to all of your channels, and your videos have made a massive impact on my life; they made me remember why I loved science and helped me discoverer many passions of mine. time really flies and I feel kind of old now.

  • 3:06 I´m 99% sure that the books said something about how most winners were from district 1 and 2 and they usually trained their whole lives and volunteered. a winner from district 12 was very rare. Non of these 4 things are skills also. Obviously a person who trained their whole life to win the hunger games is going to have better odds than someone who didn´t.

  • Thanks MatPat for teaching me how to survive 2020!

  • The capitol’s fashion reminds me of the style of Alice in wonderland.

  • I like this video, actually a lot of things mentioned have a strong reason behind it, especially with metabolism and weight gain, although endurance is important as well so it should be balanced. IMO Catniss had more chances to win due to ranged style of fighting. Combine it with poison, and guys with melee gonna lose in no time, after all highground combined a with bow utilizing poisoned arrows is OP

  • You can almost never lose with this strategy: a little while before the game starts you are on platforms that if you step off too early you go boom boom so you can wear alot of excess clothes to take off ball up and throw at them, making the quickest hunger games ever and say "thats all folks"

    • You can’t choose your clothes they give them to you

    • Well there is a few things you need to first get a good personality think of it as a reality show you need to make yourself a fan favorite

  • I loved this! I understood it so well, and now I know how important it is to do those tiny things that can make a HUUUGGGEE impact. Thank you so much for this. 👏👏👏👏

  • The hunger games is my fave book and movie series and I know ALL of the lore. So not a whole lot of this was a surprise, but still it’s outstanding you got so much info into one video!

  • Imagine if you had Matpat as your mentor now that would give you better odds of survival

  • Love how he make us laugh without trying and can causally roast movies

  • I just finished binging the films and now I’m rewatching these theories

  • I have to disagree with you on the age doesn’t matter because out of the 75 winners all but 1 is between the ages of 15 to 18 with only Finnick being younger winning at the age of 14. So being older gives you the best chances of winning and if you’re below 14 you’re the least likely to win and if you’re older then 14 then you’re odds skyrocket.

  • “I mean, what are you gonna do with a trident? Roast 3 marshmallows?” Finnick: am I a joke to you?

    • Anyone want a sugar cube *cries in dead sugar cubes*

    • That’s what i thought 😅

    • @Tazma In the books he won his first game (not the Quarter Quell) with three things: 1. His good looks (=much sponsors) 2. Survival skills he learned from Mags 3. His trident Altough his trident he got from his sponsors

    • omg i was just gonna comment something like that 😂 RIP my originality

    • @Tazma In the books he did

  • It’s simple - just be the protagonist

  • When I watched the first movie I was obsessed with the series and when I found out there was 3 more I was over the moon

  • One thing you could do is for the item your aloud to bring in to the area take a bag of marbles and when the game countdown starts throw them right next to a couple extra tribute tiles that blow up with little pressure so 2 of the tributes are gone befor the game even starts

  • I read the books first (because the library is free) and I just watched the first movie because they were recently put on Tubi. I am very impressed with how they interpreted the book. Of course they had to cut the detail so the movie wouldn’t be too long. The one thing I was disappointed on was that they didn’t have the helicopter to pick up the bodies. Edit: and that they had separate chairs instead of a loveseat on the stage at the end

  • That is not the most memorable line this is “THAT IS MAHOGANY”

  • Why is it that after watching this video I just automatically assumed I would win the games? Maths is crazy

  • I love how one of the reasons why should use knives was cuz they were the most likely weapon in the cornucopia but he told u to not run into the cornucopia

  • Mat's right about the carb loading. My older brother and I were on the Varsity swim teams at our high school and before meets our coach would get the teams together and take us all out to a buffet or Fazolis every night for a week so that we could build up those energy stores. It really works, y'all.

  • "May the odds be ever in your favor" is the opposite of a throwaway line. It's a major theme!

  • I would love if there were like 73 other novels (not as long of course) either in the winners point of view or 3rd person about each hunger games. I just think it’d be kinda cool.

    • I remember reading about Game 50 and... Jesus Christ. No wonder Haymitch is always drunk...

    • may i recommend christian blanco who went past 75?

    • I was thinking the same thing, but the book would be a view of each of the tributes until they died. Some stories would be short because of the bloodbath but it would be interesting still.

    • @A C HAHA that’s a valid point

    • Ok then why don’t u be the one to write them instead of being “I WouLD LoVe iF yOu WriTe 73 oTheR NOVELS FoR Me, kEeP eM ShOrT”

  • The way 2020 has been going I wouldn’t be surprised if we actually need this

  • honestly this is hilarious because it makes so much sense

  • Were I allowed to pick a weapon, I'd instead ask for a round shield. I can always just pick up a stick in the wild to use as a club or spear.

  • matpat has such great humor 🤣

  • How to survive: 1. Don’t get picked

    • @Jean Valjean Correct

    • "The best way to block a punch is no be there" -Nariyoshi Miyagi, 1980 whatever

    • 👍

    • no no he's got a point

    • noted

  • how to survive the hunger games: don’t volunteer as tribute

  • i feel like you can’t say age/district doesn’t matter because you’re not looking at the percentage of winners from each district you’re just looking at the fact that someone from each district has won in the past. and the ages are more variant based on what year they won because these games have been going on for 75 years you have to look at how old everyone was when they won not how old they are now. thank you for coming to my ted talk on a video 4 years old

  • I would love if there were like 73 other novels (not as long of course) either in the winners point of view or 3rd person about each hunger games. I just think it’d be kinda cool.

  • so I wanna see more theories based on the hunger games, I don't know what specifically but more hunger games please. (I know it probably won't happen because its not popular anymore though)

  • Career:**trains their entire life** MatPat: I’m about to end this mans whole career

    • Jaden Simone LMFAOOO WOAH THAT’S HILARIOUS

    • Ecks dee

    • *I'm about to end this career's whole life

    • Jaden Simone pun intended?

    • Haha 🤣 career

  • Me: * Has watched all the movies and reading the 4th book and sees this vid * YEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSS

  • It would've been funny if in the 2nd film all the careers just kinda stood there, waiting for someone to go get supplies instead of just rushing and most dying at first.

  • Honestly if you had a trident or spear you could keep an enemy at a farther distance and like Matt said most are brute force victors. So you could keep them at a distance to attack them

  • Coming back to this in case 2020 gets ideas...

  • How to increase odds in hunger games: step 1: have your memoir from your family be a unassuming necklace or bracelet (at least 23 beads) and each bead is heavy enough to trigger a pressure plate. Step 2: when waiting at your platform throw them at the other tributes pressure plates (opting for the biggest threats) 3:Enjoy the increased odds 4: follow the rest of the advice in this vid, but when you get sponsors keep the food, mix in poison and drop them above people (at night from a tree) so they eat/consume it. Bing bang boom you have good odds (I wrote this before I read Ballad of Songbirds and snakes)

    • probably wouldn't fly; the game makers would either detonate your plate to stop you or punish your family. the entire purpose of the plates is to stop any combat before the games officially start, and I doubt the game makers would appreciate being publicly embarrassed like that

    • Step 5: have massive plot armor

    • @Kirsty I thought the area around the podiums only blew up if you stepped off it or dropped something heavy??

    • Only issue being the throwing accuracy of the person. Just look at how far the podiums are, even athletes can’t throw perfectly every time, and that’s their job, and the ball is meant to be thrown. Throwing a small bead? Good luck

    • Your family will most likely be punished but yeah.

  • Crazy to think that if 2 tributes from the same district would be the final 2 they would force them to fight still

  • You seem to be forgetting about sponsors. Even if you follow this formula to a tee, people can still influence the games from the outside by either giving you or other tributes supplies and/or weapons. Also, physical strength is really downplayed in this video. While having more muscle mass does burn more calories, it's fairly negligible over the course of 2-3 weeks. I would rather be stronger and bigger than most of the other tributes because even Haymitch admits that this can tip the scales in someone's favour. Learning some basic hand to hand combat techniques in the gym would also be smart. You'll never be an expert at throwing knives in 2-3 days but you can learn a few basic karate moves in that time.

  • imagine a hunger game ONLY with people who watch matpat that would be very entertaining

  • 7:58 “What are you going to do with a trident?” Finnick: Am I a joke to you?

  • The way you survive the hunger games is to be the main character

  • Mat: gets into a fight Also mat: let me tell you your chances of survival

  • Ok but if I don't have any weapons with me and just run straight to the forrest then wouldn't that decrease the risk of survival, what am I gonna throw stones?

  • Goddammit, I'm being sent to a death match and I STILL have to do math.

  • You say age doesn´t matter in the hunger games, but Katniss once told in the book, that Finnik was the youngest survivor at the age of 14. So nobody ever was able to win with 12 or 13, what´s probable, because you´re not as strong and fast as the others.

  • “Roast three marshmallows at the same time” bruh that actually sounds pretty awesome

    • Very threatening

    • SMORESSSS

    • I’ve done 4 jumbo ones

    • Or you can just use a long wooden skewer like the ones used in BBQs to make a long marshmallow rope!?XD

    • Amateur, I roasted 4 marshmallows at once

  • How to win the Hunger Games 101: Have as much charm as a dead slug, remove your earpiece, or be an idiot lover boy Edit: If you don’t understand these references, reread the books right now
