Don't miss a Film Theory! ►
Theorists, have you ever heard of Captain Jack Sparrow? I'm pretty sure most of you have. What if I told you he was in trouble? Like DEADLY trouble? No, I don't mean from undead pirates or Davy Jones himself. I'm talking about good old dehydration. That's right, this rum drinking pirate is DYING of thirst and it's all his fault!

  • "You're without a doubt the worst Pirate I've ever heard of"

  • "Imagine feeling groggy, like you just woke up, but all the time"

  • Wait... is this seriously the first time MatPat has done a Film Theory on the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise? We need more of these.

  • "He essentially boiled his brain. Doesn't sound like a big deal?" In WHAT WORLD do you think BOILING YOUR BRAIN ISNT A BIG DEAL

  • The thought of him being dehydrated is smart and logical, but I still think that some of us just still want to believe that the reason for everything he does is just because hes a crazy drunk person that doesn't think of consequences to his actions or in other words, he is an awesome person we want to have the skills of.

  • The hallucinations are from being in Davy Jones' Locker. Being alone does funny things to ya, and ya can't die in the Locker.

  • The fact that Jack literally never sweats AT ALL makes me respect the people who made those movies even more, whether it was intentional or not

  • I went into this video expecting it to be a theory about how Jack never got off the island he was left marooned on and hallucinated the entire series as he died of dehydration. I'm leaving this video concerned that I could very well be severely dehydrated because I've had a lot of these symptoms for years.

  • He may be going crazy from dehydration and rum, I love him as he is. Also, another thing is I always considered Jack to be hiding more secrets (whether he knows of them or not). He has such incredible luck and endurance - it's beyond human. It's why I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Jack was still lingering across the seas somewhere, seeking entertainment and treasure years after he would logically last. And even if he dies, I think he'd just manage to stumble back again to the land of the living. So with all this, the legend of Jack Sparrow would be like an urban legend, that people don't know to be true.

  • When I was younger I loved the show Danny Phantom, and while watching film theory I had wondered if you did one on that show. Which I think would be super interesting! Like finding the amount of volts it took to fuse ectoplasm into Danny’s DNA or even what ectoplasm is or the closest known thing to it. Just an idea😊

  • A neat detail to denote: Jack can only be seen wobbling around as he walks on land. At sea he always walks normally, almost like its inverted.

  • Some Jack Sparrow words to live by:

  • My take away from this is that although Johnny Depp's portrayal of Jack Sparrow is world renowned, it's still underrated

  • I’ve seen these movies more times than I can count, and while I agree that he probably is dehydrated, I think it’s a real combination of genius, madness, and illness. They say there’s a fine line between genius and insanity and I think his dehydration makes his jump rope with that line.

  • Hi, MatPat!

  • I think Calypso took such a liking to Captain Jack Sparrow (not romantically but because she found him humorous and interesting), that, she granted him excessive luck, longevity and bits and pieces of quasi-immortality (he can die from old age, etc., but not from ill health and luck keeps him safe from accidents and fighting and such).

  • Only MatPat can say "and what we're most interested in today: heat injuries." and no one blinks

  • The fact that jack is the only character to never sweat is really surprising.

  • This actually makes a lot of sense and is logical! Thank you MattPat for your hard-work. Being a pirate is never easy.
