Consider the world of Cars - a world populated by living, breathing, thinking cars, surrounded by evidence of a human society; but with out any actual humans. There are certain theories that posit these Cars are AI and are all that are left after humans left our world behind. But certain things just don't seem to fit. So if they aren't AI then what are they? Prepare to have your mind blown.
Many of you have asked me to weigh in on the Pixar timeline theory, consider this my first step.

  • Pixar animators: let's make a movie where cars are like humans. It will be fun. Filim theorists: they are INSECTS

    • @Trick4Real ROB_LOX exactly what happened to the theory video about the humans being in the car exoskeletons?

    • I have my own theory about this Cars movie: Few pasts ago, the man eating buses, or the SCP-2086 colonies that escaped from SCP Foundation has thrive out. They preying on humans, camouflage as normal buses. That's why we see no more humans, only it's remnants. However the man eating buses are bored of their old look, so they start develop and evolve their own new species. They evolve and it's no longer only buses, buses, and buses. Instead, the SCP 2086 or these man eating buses develop become cars, taxis, cranes, planes, boats, or any vehicles (etc.) that we see in Cars. Sometimes, the evolved SCP 2086 has evolved become smaller as tiny beetle cars with organic wings and some kinda a pair of antennas, while the bigger ones lose their wings.

    • thanks for spoiling. >:(

    • lol

    • Yes

  • The cars needing oxygen part could also just be because all combustion engines need oxygen to work. (edit: Wow never had so many likes on a comment Thanks!)

    • Wow! Good point.

    • @Minke every car has an air intake wym

    • So that poses the side theory, can the electric cars be able to survive underwater or out of atmosphere conditions if the ICE cars only breath in air just for their engines

    • @Minke Any gas engine needs oxygen to run bro, every single car has intakes, just not huge.

    • @Naumen i mean its rare to have a normal car to have air intakers but yeah

  • Just binge watching some past film theory, and I realized... Scientists have already made artificial tissues to replace damaged tissues in humans. What if BNL, controlled by AI, developed a way to string these tissues and some external materials (i.e. metal) to create half-machine-half-organism cyborgs, based off of already existing and already functioning bases? Jon Negroni was right. Are the cars In Cars Really cars? Yes, the cars In Cars Are really a mix of mechanical and biological engineering.

    • Possibly out of control nanobots that reconfigure the host, hence the different vehicle species?

  • I’m actually a bit surprised MatPat hasn’t done more videos on the Pixar Theory especially with all the new films (and potential evidence) that have come out since then

  • I realize while all of these are fair arguments, it's worth noting the car in Cars 2 behind the whole gas situation had an engine that Mater said was "One of the worst engines ever made", suggesting a lot more cars have engines. Also, Mater's engine is always exposed.

    • In the dvd of Cars 1, we can seen a left over scene where lightning Mcqueen swap his engine with Bessie. That means they can swap with eatch other. So, the cars can be insect who can grow up in an exoskeleton and change time, after time, after time (sorry for the grammar, i'm french)

  • The real question... why do they have door handles

  • In all the Cars films, you can see the Pizza Planet truck as a living car. So i think that in the vast future, long after Wall-E, all the cars left in the world somehow got resurrected, and they could be either toys or machines. I'm buying into the idea that they're toys because the Incredibles never explicitly mention anything about an AI controlling the Omnidroid, so i dont buy it.

  • Can't wait to see his reaction to the crabs in cars three. Lol Edit: I had to rewatch the scene quickly, she just mentioned crabs, it never showed them.

    • AND IN CARS 1 THERES A INSECT THERE WHEN MQUEEN IS WITH SALLY

    • LIKE THE BIRD

    • ITS A CAR SHAPED LIKE A CRAB

  • I tried explaining this to my parents years ago... They thought I was crazy

  • Gotta disagree with you on this one. 1) Breathing oxygen doesn't imply biological. Combustion Engines 'breathe' oxygen too. 2) Eating food and hiccupping don't necessarily have to have biological original either. They could easily be behaviors programmed into them, to imitate human behavior to a fault, whether it makes sense or not (which would explain a lot of things in the movies, honestly). 3) The featurette didn't say 'That's where his brain is' it said 'That's where his brains are'. Brains being figurative for what's controlling him, rather than literally multiple fleshy brains. 4) I don't see any evidence that the cars 'grew' or 'evolved' wings, as opposed to simply being designed and built that way. They are just a different model of car with different features. While it's not impossible for them to be insects, their similarity to actual cars designed by humans is a bit too close to merely be coincidence. It's more plausible that they were deliberately designed by some higher power (Syndrome AI or otherwise) to take the shape of cars.

    • It does make sense. It actually gives me the Terminator vibes while hearing the theory and reading your comment here.

  • Just a small question, in cars 2, the cars go inside planes and trains, with a normal interior, but they're still alive, how does that work?

    • Lol idk

    • its probably hidden where the cargo hold will be

    • Remember hey, that’s just a theory

    • Cars 2 sucks that's why. It breaks the rules of the universe. There are sidewalks in Cars 2 There are SINKS in the bathroom Also the writers should've just made a pilot car instead of the plane having actual eyes. Makes no sense.

    • The train must have the organs inside the walls

  • Here's a thing. McQueen is actually based on the Dodge Viper... In some form, I think from my best guess. I was trying to figure out what kind of car he was, since all the other cars in the world are based on some type of real model and make. From the side exhaust to the ducktail it could most certainly be a Viper considering. What do you think?

    • i think the same

  • This is just so great. I can't stop smiling, literally. I think of these things when i watch these movies

  • I don't know why but I find this theory so cool :D This theory of Cars kind of reminds of Terminator: Salvation as the cars are mechanic-organic organisms like one character from Terminator: Salvation is partially a terminator but has some flesh and bits of organs, such as a heart. Buy n Large also reminded me of Skynet (also from Terminator universe) since they are more focused on creating more tech to take over the world.

  • I mean, cars DO breathe oxygen, so that's sort of a moot point. Also, who's to say those "chitin" wings aren't just polarized plexiglass?

  • Cars in cars aren’t cars Some of them are trains, planes and even boats

    • @Bartosz L those aren't meant to make sense at all, it's a kid's clip so what do you expect

    • Screw it, the next movie shall be called Everything

    • And a bus

    • @nich sulol the movie is a kids movie-

  • Just got to say. According to science its impossible for any animal (even by an evolutionary standpoint) to have those moving wheels like we see in cars also propellers and plane engines.

    • I have my own theory about this Cars movie: Few pasts ago, the man eating buses, or the SCP-2086 colonies that escaped from SCP Foundation has thrive out. They preying on humans, camouflage as normal buses. That's why we see no more humans, only it's remnants. • it's just a theory, a ga- a film theory

  • This is the most interesting film theory I’ve heard in a long time.

  • I had already seen the Studios video and I honestly thought it was a fever dream because I could never find it again.🤣 Glad to know it exists and I'm not crazy

  • I always assumed people knew how the cars worked. When I was kid watching the first care film, there was a deleted scene that showed that the cars engines were basically souls. With Lightning’s engine being out in a steam roller meaning his consciousness was also in the steam roller. Even Mater’s engine gets put into Lightning’s body and now Mater’s the race car. I get that it’s a dream but the fact that the scene ends with the same community service line kind of implies the same thing. So that’s how I though the cars always worked and how they choose career options, their engines are basically souls. Wow, Soul ripped off Cars, I knew it all along.

  • Pixar: just making a harmless kids movie Mat pat: they are not cars, they are insects, they have organs

    • lol

    • @Buğra Akı *A FILM THEORY*

    • I have my own theory about this Cars movie: Few pasts ago, the man eating buses, or the SCP-2086 colonies that escaped from SCP Foundation has thrive out. • @Patrick van der Laan But HEY! it's just a theory and the cars movie is a movie SO OFC wE NEED DRamAaA SO ANYTHINGS Possible

    • rule 36: if it exists, there is a theory of it, most of the time dark

  • there is a problem with this theory though. insects breathe through spiracles while the cars breath through lungs since mcqueen had hiccup and the spy had a air tank

  • This is the craziest thing I've seen in a long time and I thoroughly enjoyed it

  • Imagine if Cars would've been written by an anonymous person on a Fanfiction webpage. It would've been seen as if the writer had been on a few drugs, recently, and deemed as a very stupid and strange idea. Only because it's Pixar...

  • Couple of things here: A: why are there taxis in cars? they can't fit! B: Why are there Sidewalks? I thought they were for the forklifts like guido but they go on the road as well. C: if you go to 50:55 in Cars 2, you see a car with headlights as eyes, revealing seats inside it. lol?

    • I have my own theory about this Cars movie: Few pasts ago, the man eating buses, or the SCP-2086 colonies that escaped from SCP Foundation has thrive out. • the last one is interesting. Evolutionary quirk, maybe?

  • What I wish he would've mentioned is the fact that they have sushi.. where is this fish meat coming from?? Do they have tiny fish cars and eat those? That opens up a whole other debate about car cannabilism

    • Maybe fish submarines

    • Not really, it's like a shark eating tuna. Same for Atlantians eating fish.

    • Shut up you’re giving him ideas

    • @Ethan Goh oh wait cars can't have waste their just pee instead because has powerful engine than human bite

    • @THEEYE SEESALL weird boat been skinned off

  • I thought we already knew they where living just from their eyes.

  • 5 years later and I still want to know why those cars driving through radiator springs locked themselves

  • Cars takes place in 2006 and a Bug's Life takes place in the 90s. And these aren't separate year measurements. In Cars 2, Catholicism is straight up name dropped, and Radiator Springs was founded in 1909, with the Cars who were around back then being the cars of the real life time period. The theory of the two films being connected is factually proven wrong by the movies themselves.

  • If you knew how a combustion engine worked, you’d know they need oxygen to ignite the fuel caused by the spark. So yes, cars actually do breath oxygen.😑

  • Pixar: Lets make a movie about talking cars. Us: Theyre insects

    • I have my own theory about this Cars movie: Few pasts ago, the man eating buses, or the SCP-2086 colonies that escaped from SCP Foundation has thrive out. They preying on humans, camouflage as normal buses. That's why we see no more humans, only it's remnants. • *They’re

    • xd

    • I swear if your comments keep getting more likes than mine… i’m a karin

    • @Marc Joseph Constantino they are definitely cars 😂

  • Do you think that the cars would actually be able to fit on a plane and still have it be flyable? This could be a good mini-theory.

  • The cars need oxygen to run their "engine" they need the oxygen to combined with fuel for combustion and to cool their engines but idk y they would need food

  • the breathing part doesnt necessarily imply life, engines need to breathe too

  • Question of the day: how many times did Mat say…”Cars”

  • Pixar animators "we just wanted to make a movie about talking cars"

    • @Sagar Shrestha yes

    • Him: Peace was never an option (YEETS A BUNCH OF THESE)

    • I have my own theory about this Cars movie: Few pasts ago, the man eating buses, or the SCP-2086 colonies that escaped from SCP Foundation has thrive out. • Mattpatt : don't even try to deny it, there's *theory* in this

    • I swear people on ILaward can't accept that everyone can have their own imagination and creativity.

  • pixar: we just want to make a kids movie about taking cars Mat Pat: THEY HAVE ORGANS INSIDE THEM!

  • In one of the concept cut scenes from Cars (Community Service), they remove Lightning's engine or brain or whatever you call it an put it into a Steam Roller. The idea that they are alive and have a brain/engine is supported, although in that clip they can pull the engine out and put it into a new vehicle frame, so making it seem like the engine is the only important part for sentience.

  • Its just another universe with living cars. I dont think theyre bugs, they are just unrealistically living cars

  • Interesting theory, but there's one very important aspect you ignored and that's their internal combustion engines integrated into their bodies like Borg drones. Multiple times in the first movie they show them starting those engines before a race. Plus the fact that those engines run on fuel from its own fuel system separate from their digestion systems. In the first movie when Lightening gets released he makes an escape attempt but runs out of gas because they siphoned it out of his fuel tank, but he didn't pass out or die after it happened. So they have mobility up to a certain point, but for moving fast, or far it seems, they need those engines. Which puts a gaping hole in your theory that Cars are actually bugs.

  • This doesn't ruin my childhood, this explains it

  • Matpat: back to the good car movies. Cars 2: am I NOT a joke to you!?

  • If the cars are bugs, how can they develop special wheel systems and are able to drink oil?

  • Hey Mat, I don't let your theories ruin my childhood memories. Just incase that helps out for you

  • Another detail is in Cars(1) when mcqueen and sally go on a drive. They end up at the where sally first met the others, you can see tiny little car flies.

  • If u ever feel unwanted, remember there were taxis in CARS

    • Ummmm😳😳

    • 😂🤣😂🤣

    • Thanks i needed something to cherre me up

    • imagine opening a taxis door but before that you notice all the mirrors are blacked out and you smell human body parts. then you see a giant fucking brain and large flat eye on the windshield just staring at you. creepy. go to images and you'll see what i mean, who drew it.

    • Where did the passengers seat?

  • The moment when he said cars are organic creatures, I was like:"Stop it. Get some help".

  • The only question I have for these movies was, in the movie I've seen them all get gas by drinking it through their mouth, however during the cars 1 movie I saw lightning getting gas from... the back... so what up?

  • I think they are more like hermit crabs using the mechanical panels as a temporary shell for their inner parts. That explains why they could have similarities to cars because the crabs evolved intelligence and copied human car designs for their shells.

  • I wonder how actually terrifying would they look like in real life

  • Well of course the cars in Cars aren't cars Some of them are trucks

  • i think some sort of sentient species actually adapted to fit inside and control real, inanimate cars. think about it. thats why the cars still all have engines and exhaust pipes and door handles, but the empty parts (the driver/passenger seats) are filled with a living creature (brains, digestive systems) that controls it all. this also explains how in the movies there is still human infrastructure, food, and animals to make food from (think sushi, like in cars 2).

  • 9:25 They are also in a scene in cars 1 11:35 I just realized that the beetle is a “slug *bug* “ car

  • After watching this I'm still wondering... How do cars "make" cars?

    • IDK and I dont wanna know ngl

  • There is a short scene in the first cars movie where on the old gas station there are beetles. They are small, but clearly visible.

  • Kid: How are babies born? Mother: You'll know when you're older Kid: So how are cars made? Mother: It's complicated...

    • Nice joke -

    • I swear people on ILaward can't accept that everyone can have their own imagination and creativity.

    • @Dr. Doge ohhhhhhhhhh dogeeeeeeeee

    • Well, well, we meet again, Guy Without a Mustache.

    • I remember you always commenting on WHAT IF 😥

  • It’s amazing that that Rocky 3 (or what you said it was) is actually the plot of Cars 3

  • Imagine making a movie without making a disturbing biology for the characters and MatPat starts to make a film theory episode about its characters disturbing biology 💀

  • MY GOODNESS. THIS THERORY WAS INSANE!! GG *MatPat*

  • I love how people can put puzzle pieces together that are not there.

  • Guys, The bugs in the Bug movie aren't actually bugs... They're cars!!!!

    • I have my own theory about this Cars movie: Few pasts ago, the man eating buses, or the SCP-2086 colonies that escaped from SCP Foundation has thrive out. They preying on humans, camouflage as normal buses. That's why we see no more humans, only it's remnants. • BoB tHe bUiLdEr!!!!!!

    • But HEY, that’s just a theory. A comment theory

    • LE GASP

  • 6:50 that movie is genuinely so good people really should watch it

  • The 1st car movie has vw "bugs" too. It's just really subtle

  • 10:18 I think the rims are also shoes because we see them changing the rims in the pit stops during the races and lightning also has new rims in cars two for the world Grand Prix

  • Actually, they’re cars. They’re just sentient, like they’re kinda like robots.

  • If you ever feel useless, remember there are SIDEWALKS in CARS

    • Omg 😱

    • And that sonic has a car...

    • @David Jones i would think the taxis would guide you to where you need to go (you follow them)

    • Its only in cars 2 I think Which was a terrible sequel

    • taxis and buses

  • the cars can't be living with organs and stuff, you forgot that dusty needed a new gearbox in planes 2. so they are machines.

  • You had me until the commercial airplane takes off. What exactly is it transporting? And how according to your brilliant theory.

  • But, the thing is, in a short where mater goes back in time, he opens mcqueens hood so stanley will stay, and you can see mcqueens engine underneath it, so they do have a car engine, and their organs have to all be inside the car, since mcqueen flips in the trailer for cars 3, to the point where you can see the underside of mcqueen

  • 10:20 in cars 3 the tire and rim are both off, so I would say the axles are the equivalent of shoes, rims are socks, and tires are shoes. 😀

  • Matpat, today me and my friends had a serious debate on how Disney is turning all of the classics into live action films. We were trying to figure out if Disney just wants to simply recreate the films, or if they are running out of ideas. Or my favorite they want to target older audiences for more profit ($). But then my friend chimed in that's just a theory, a film theory and that got me thinking, what would matpat have to say about this matter?

    • It's impossible to "run out of ideas", having ideas is much easier than make movies. If they make the same things over and over again usually is because they don't want to risk millions of dollars producing new stuff that may not be appealing. Nostalgia Critic made an editorial(named "Why is Nothing Original Anymore?") where he explained very well an opinion that is almost the same that I think: it's much easy to market a movie if already has a fanbase and also they can make more profit from the old material with the newcomers (like newcomers to Star Trek buying the old movies on DVD).

    • Madibug most Disney classics are actual stories from cultures but made child friendly. They're just telling them in a different way than the children's movies. But you could argue they're showing them again to the same kids after they've matured and the story has matured.

    • All of the Disney people say they want to expand the stories make them more relatable and fun *_and_* make the stories as lifelike as they wanted them to be in the first place but didn't have ^ advanced ^ technology to do so

    • Madibug I think they are trying to make money

    • I thought they were just trying to keep the rights to these characters, isn't that the case?

  • Another question that needs answering: are the locomotives in Thomas and friends accually trains?

  • @TheFilmTheorists But why did they evolve into car creatures? What was the evolutionary benefit for such a transition, especially if their lives were not being threatened by humans? Also, how come cars can still be transported by larger trucks or by planes? If the insides are fleshy and contain organs, other cars should not be able to be transported inside one another. Also, what would be the timeline for Cars be? You said distant future, but WALL-E is set in a distant future as well. Would this be way after that? If so, what do you theorize happened after humans came back to Earth in WALL-E? We need a timeline, Matthew. We need one now...

  • im so lucky i started watching this show after my childhood was ruined lol

  • did you know that Nemo from "Finding Nemo" was actually dead the whole time! Merlin was just imagining him! In the beginning of the movie it shows all the eggs get eaten. Also this is because the name "Nemo" means "Nothing" in Latin!

  • Next theory should be why the Lamp always targets the “I”

    • @Vegas Miri that made me laugh

    • Because it's a communist, it hates I and loves we

    • RACISM! SEXISM! COLORISM! THIS IS DISCRIMINATION!

    • Why is there a lamp?

  • About the thing you mentioned where there are no humans alive in A Bug's Life, I believe in Monsters Inc, when the lizard guy "Randall" was transported to a door where it lead him to a trailer, it was the same location where the insect/bug flies towards the zapper.

  • Just gonna have to point this out… they are actually cars, the cars grew intelligence and killed the humans, and that’s just kinda proven 🤷‍♂️

  • With the question: "Where are the humans?" It has a simple answer. Multiverse Theory.

    • The humans were put out of existence by the cars, this is canon btw

  • He does realize all cars get the checkerd flag right? All joking aside, love the vids, keep it up!
